Torre dell’Orso
Tower Bear is a seaside of Salento, and makes part of the Marina Meledugno that lies in the province of Lecce.
Tourist destination for many Italians, and not only ... it’s famous for its silver sand beaches and for its particularly clear sea because of the currents of the channel of Otranto. The clarity and cleanness of the sea, the deep blue of the water combined with the extraordinary beauty of the sea floor led Torre dell’Orso to be repeatedly awarded with the European Blue Flag.
The name derives from the presence of the Tower, on the coast, a tower dating from the sixteenth century used to sight the Turkish ships bound for the Salento. The “Orso” (bear) origin, however, has several hypotheses. Some say it refers to the the monk seal, others connect it to the surname “Urso” owner of the agro at that time or to the Tower of Saint Orsola as the coastal towers in those days had the names of saints. Another hypothesis, perhaps the most fascinating one is that it refers to features of the rock under the tower, a rock with the profile of a bear with its snout and ears well defined.
Torre dell’Orso is one of the most picturesques natural masterpieces in Italy, its creek is about 800 yards and it’s bounded by two high cliffs. Behind the beach you will find low dunes with beautiful pine forests, crossed by a water stream called “Brunese”.
The south area of the reef is characterized by cave “St. Christopher” in which were found Latin grafittis and ancient greek writings which are testimonies of religious people and sailors.
Father south of Torre dell’Orso, at a short distance from the beach, there are two stacks close to each other and very alike , they are called the two sisters.
